Porcelain Crowns
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects
and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular. They are highly durable
and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are
made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.
Reasons for crowns:
- Broken or fractured teeth.
What's involved with a Porcelain crown?
At Normandy Dentistry, using CEREC technology we can save you time by performing the crown procedure in one
appointment. Typically, crown appointments require a minimum of two appointments separated by two weeks
of laboratory work. That's a lot of time in the chair, with a temporary, and away from work.
With CEREC technology, a specialized camera is used to take a highly accurate digital impression that will be used to create
your custom porcelain crown on site.
While the tooth is numb, the dentist will remove any decay and/or old filling materials. The space will then be thoroughly
cleaned and carefully prepared, shaping the surface to properly fit an crown restoration. A digital impression is then taken
and your porcelain crown is then designed on our computer for an accurate beautiful fit. Once designed, the computer
wirelessly transmits the information to our CEREC milling unit that will carve your crown out of a solid piece of porcelain.
As soon as the machine is done, your new crown will be carefully and precisely bonded into place. A few adjustments may
be necessary to ensure a proper fit and that your bite is comfortable.
You will receive care instruction at the conclusion of your treatment. Good oral hygiene practices, a proper diet, and regular
dental visits will aid in the life of your new crown.
